How to Winterize Your Car for Michigan Weather

winterize your car for Michigan weather

The long, cold months of winter ahead pose a challenge to your vehicle. If you are prepared ahead of the snow, sleet, and ice, you may have less trouble with the winter weather than others.

Test your battery

Extremely low temperatures can dramatically reduce battery capacity. Have your battery tested and possibly even replaced to prevent the dreaded engine turnover. You don’t want to end up on the side of the road with a dead battery!

Replace and refill fluids

Things like oil, coolant, brake fluid, and wiper fluid should be checked and replaced or refilled before temperatures drop. Switch to winter-friendly wiper fluid to improve visibility.

Switch tires

It’s important to keep an eye on the tread of your vehicle’s tires because worn treads will slip easier. Consider making the switch to winter or snow tires, which are made out of special rubber and have unique tread patterns for better grip.

Pack an Emergency Kit

Emergency situations can happen, so it’s best to be prepared for the possibility. Pack an emergency kit in the trunk of your vehicle with necessities like nonperishable snacks, water bottles, blankets, jumper cables, and a flashlight.
